The Effect of Iodine by Mouth on the Reaction to Intravenous Injections of Thyroxin.

چکیده
Repeated observations within recent years have shown that the oral administration of iodine will usually be followed by a striking reduction in the basal metabolism in patients with exophthalmic goiter. A histologic study of the thyroid glands which have been removed from these patients gives evidence that definite involutional changes follow the use of iodine which indicate an anatomic regression toward a normal or colloid resting state (1). It has, therefore, been assumed on very good evidence that the anatomic alteration of the gland, in part, at least, explains the reduction in the basal metabolism and the associated improvement in the patient's condition. Another possible explanation of this phenomenon is that iodine may have a direct effect, in some unknown manner, on the circulating product of the thyroid gland whether the latter is an excessive or abnormal secretion or both. In order to obtain information bearing on the action of iodine on a pure excess of the secretion of the thyroid gland, the following experimental studies were carried out. In brief, the plan of experimentation consisted in determining the effect of intravenous injections of thyroxin in rabbits as indicated by changes in the basal metabolism, pulse-rate, and body-weight, Following this the observations were repeated with similar intravenous injections of thyroxin, after the animals had been given iodine orally in the form of Lugol's solution. Under these conditions an opportunity was afforded to observe if iodine by mouth can alter, in any way, the animals' response to thyroxin.

متن کاملSynthesis and Crystal Growth of Sb2S3 Nanorods Using Iodine as an Initiator Material via Electrochemical Mechanism in Hydrothermal Condition
Crystalline antimony sulfide (Sb2S3) with nanorods morphology was successfully prepared via hydrothermal method by the reaction of elemental sulfur, antimony and iodine as starting materials with high yield at 180°C for 24h.Using oxidation reagents like iodine as an initiator of redox reaction to prepare Sb2S3 is reported for first time. Crystal growth of Sb2S3 was done by increasing reaction t...

متن کاملEffect of Exogenous Testosterone, Finasteride, and Castration on serum level of Thyroxin
Background: The secretion of thyroxin (T4) as the main hormone of thyroid gland is regulated by androgens. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of testosterone and finasteride administration and castration on serum levels of T4 and to show the effect of this regulation on total body weight, weight of testis, and the weight of prostate. Methods: Male adult rats (n = 32) were divided in...
متن کاملThe Kinetics and Mechanism of Oxidation of the N-Substituted Urea-Titanium (III) Complexes by Iodine (AS I-3) in Ethanol and Acetonitrile
The oxidation of complexes of Ti(III), (TiL6)3+ (L=ur, Meur, DMeur, DEture, N-Bu-ur, and Phur), by iodine as I3- in ethanol and acetonitrile solutions, appears to proceed as a second order reaction and is much faster in ethanol solution (where solvolysis occurs) than in acetonitrile. The enthalpy of activation appears to decrease as ligand's size ...
